Skin Deep

I just finished reading Skin Deep by Pamela Clare. It is the first in the I-Team After Hours series. I hope it is the first of many!

This is the story of Marc Hunter’s sister, Megan, her daughter Emily, and wounded Marine, Nate West. The action starts right from the beginning – Megan is leaving the soup kitchen in Denver after volunteering. She needs to go pick-up Emily at daycare. Before she is out of the parking lot, she is accosted by Emily’s father – a meth head – Donny. Enter Nate. He saves the day (the first of several times).

Both Nate and Megan have all kinds of baggage and issues to overcome, but it is heart-warming how they see each other for whom they are. They don’t hold onto the past; they are both willing to help each other in moving past their obstacles.

This novella is filled with loveable characters. Nate’s father Jack gets wrapped around Emily’s little finger in no time. Buckwheat, a Palomino horse, helps both mother and daughter heal and learn to trust. And, best of all, there are lots of Julian and Marc. The men are still protective of their women; in time they accept Nate with open arms. Well, they compare gun notes, etc!

This was such a sweet story. I had tears in my eyes for the last quarter of the book. I don’t want to spoil how it ends, but needless to say the ending is wonderful.

As a bonus, a short story is included at the end – Marc & Julian Make a Beer Run. I laughed and chuckled and managed to shake my head when the guys stumbled into trouble. I think the funniest part was the discussion about Alpha and Beta teams and which teams were picking up what.

A must read! 5 out of 5 stars!
