Her life was a lie!

Bailey knew her upbringing wasn’t normal but she’s worked hard to stabilize her life. At 29, she finally has a good business, a stable home; her life is miles from that of her childhood. Then suddenly her mother dies, leaving a gaping hole and a discovery that they may not even be related. If Guy, the private investigator is to be believed, her life is a lie. Using the skills she learned on the streets, Bailey travels back through a sketchy and dangerous past, to find answers. Dodging bullets, staying ahead of those who want her dead and convincing Guy she can do it alone, are making it difficult to discover not only the secrets of her mother’s past but that of a family claiming she is theirs.

Everyone seems to have a story… but who’s telling the truth? And who wants her dead? Is Guy part of the solution? Or part of the problem? To discover the facts, she’ll have to untangle a web of deceit, lies, and secrets, dating back over thirty years.

But can she do it in time…

Interview with Maggie:

Tell us about the story. Where did you get the inspiration for it? How long did it take you to write it? Do you share any traits or likes/ dislikes with your characters? Where is your story set? A fictional place or somewhere you’ve visited/ lived?

Captured Lies was conceived after I had seen posters about missing children and then not long after that I heard about a child abducted by a family member. It just seemed so wrong and so scary for the child. Then maybe a month or so later, I was on my way to the airport, when a plane flew rather low over us. I thought it looked like it was going to crash and then ideas started coming to me. Could someone survive that? What if that someone was a baby, what would happen to him/her? What would happen if someone was kidnapped and grew up not knowing? What if one day they accidently found out the life they’d lived wasn’t the one they were supposed to have? What if that life was supposed to have been good but turned out to be really lousy? The ideas kind of melded together and out the other side, came Captured Lies.

So ideas for my books often come from seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, feeling something and then changing the circumstances and wondering ‘what if’. It comes so natural to me that I’m surprised that not everyone does it :). Captured Lies took about a year to write. I wrote it at a time when my kids were in a number of sports and activities. While they were practicing I was writing. There are some traits and likes and dislikes that I share with Bailey, the main character. In some ways, her emotional, self discovery journey was mine.

Captured Lies is based in Canada, it starts in Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton, Jasper), then goes to BC (Valemount) and then to Ontario. I have lived in a few of the places mentioned and visited most of the others.

Fun questions…

How long have you been writing? – for about forty years (off and on). Yikes that shocked me to even say. 🙂

What is your favorite genre to write and to read? I love reading and writing suspense/thrillers.

What is the last book you read? – Aerenden Series – Book One – The Child Returns (a very good book)

What is the last movie you saw? The Internship – it has some pretty funny moments.

Are we more likely to catch you reading a paperback book or on an e-reader? – nowadays I mostly read on my ereader. It’s just so much more convenient and gives me a lot more choices to read.

What is your idea of the perfect day? – getting up at 6:00 a.m., the sun is shining, I go for a run, come back shower, sit down at my computer – do social media and emails, write for a few hours, spend time with my kids when they get home from school. Have supper together as a family and then some family time – hiking, talking, playing games, etc. in the evening.

What is your preference: coffee, tea, or soda? I love to drink herbal tea.
