A Friday Favorite

I’m finally getting around to writing a review on S.E. Jakes’ Daylight Again, Hell or High Water #3.

The Hell or High Water series is one of my favorite M-M series – makes it easy since I love me some Prophet and Tommy!

Here’s the blurb for Daylight Again:Daylight_Again

Prophet Drews is a man on the edge, and he’s pulling Tom Boudreaux, his partner on the job and in real life, right over with him. When his old CO calls in a favor, Prophet asks Tom to join the off-the-grid rescue. But the mission raises all of Prophet’s old ghosts: CIA assassins, the terrorist Sadiq, and most importantly, John—traitor, former teammate, and Prophet’s first love.

To help bury those ghosts for good, Prophet and Tom gather the members of Prophet’s former SEAL team . . . and a spook named Cillian who’s been tailing Prophet for years. In the process, Prophet is forced to face his team’s shifting loyalties, ghosts who refuse to stay dead, and scariest of all, his own limitations.

With everyone’s lives in danger, Prophet and Tom must unravel a tangled knot of secrets, including their own. Prophet must decide how much to reveal to Tom, while Tom must decide how far he’s willing to go to help Prophet lay his ghosts to rest.

Before you read any further, you need to know that there are spoilers coming. If you want to read the series or this installment, but haven’t gotten there yet, stop now!

This is your final warning…spoilers ahead!

I rated this read 5 out of 5 stars all because of Tommy, even though this story centered on Prophet’s issues and ghosts. Tommy was the first one to spit out the “L” word to Prophet, and oh, was it amazing!! Granted it took until I was 86% into the read, but here ya go:

“Just you.” Tom closed his eyes for just a second, soothed by the warm rub of Prophet’s palm, then opened them. “I love you. Who the fuck else could compete?”

There is also an awesome twist at the end. That one I won’t spoil. Let’s just say – Prophet’s far from crazy.

So, I’ve totally gotten ahead of myself. I want to share some other great lines from this story. There were many so it will be tough to pick and choose which I ones I share.

Let’s go back to the beginning, well, maybe not that far. At 34% Tommy and Prophet are drinking (yep, Prophet and umbrella drinks are a riot!), and then they get to discussing serious things – like the upcoming mission. Prophet, as always, is trying to protect Tommy.

Tommy starts this snippet:

“I’m going to chance it. Figure the universe already put us through hell. I think we’re meant to come out the other side together.”

Prophet rolled his eyes. “Romantic fucking voodoo Cajun shit.”

“That’s lovely. Anyway, what would we do with all our free time?”

At 42% the guys are in club – they take care of business with Prophet’s teammates and then take to the dance floor. Oh, how could I forget the bar fight in the middle?? Silly me. Probably because I liked this little section…

“Right,” Prophet teased. “Because we don’t have enough sex.” But really, sex with Tommy was everything. It was where and how he’d gotten the best possible education on everything Tommy – and he was well aware that Tom had gotten the same information on him. Until you really knew what someone was like in bed, you didn’t really know them at all.

“Never enough,” Tom informed him seriously.

[You’ve got to read the next couple of paragraphs on your own – they are all about what Tommy would do to Proph and how much he would love it.]

[After the dance ended and they returned to their hotel room] Tom turned and asked, “Is there any way out of this?”

“Barring John getting killed by a random bus when he crosses the street? No.”

“So we pray for random buses,” Tom said seriously.

Last sample. In this section (63%) they haven’t heard from Cillian even though Prophet has texted.

Tommy starts with his idea:

“I say we go into his apartment and search the place anyway.”

Prophet crossed his arms and asked, “For what,” with a smirk.

“So I can trash it?” Tom said hopefully.

“Isn’t it enough that you threw the couch out the window?”

“You fucking love that shit,” Tom growled. “The jealousy turns you the hell on.”

Of course the couch had to be mentioned in this read – it is rather famous now!!

So what were some of your favorite lines? What did I miss that you liked? Be sure to let me know in the comments 🙂
