Sunday Snippet: Break Out

Unfortunately, I’ve been away from the blog for a bit. A close family friend passed away unexpectedly. It’s taken me some time to figure out why his death has really bothered me. I think it’s because he’s younger than my parents–too young to be gone already. Generally, for me, it’s been a wake up call that life is fleeting, and we need to cherish friends and family.

Okay, so enough with the philosophizing. What have I been reading? A novella that’s got a sexy, brooding vampire in outer space. Seriously. I just finished Break Out (Blood Hunter #1) by Nina Croft.

Description:Break_Out

The year is 3048, Earth is no longer habitable, and man has fled to the stars where they’ve discovered the secret of immortality—Meridian. Unfortunately, the radioactive mineral is exorbitantly expensive and only available to a select few. A new class comprised of the super rich and immortal soon evolves. The Collective, as they’re called, rule the universe.

Two-thousand-year-old Ricardo Sanchez, vampire and rogue pilot of the space cruiser, El Cazador, can’t resist two things: gorgeous women and impossible jobs. When beautiful Skylar Rossaria approaches him to break a prisoner out of the Collective’s maximum security prison on Trakis One, Rico jumps at the chance. Being hunted by the Collective has never been so dangerous–or so fun!

Instead of doing a traditional review, I thought I would share some of my favorite passages. Rico, the vampire, had some great lines in this one!

Snippets:

The story opens with action:

Rico hurled himself behind the huge trunk of a tree and stood, back pressed against the rough bark, as the missiles whizzed past.

At 1%, more Rico, demanding Tannis, the captain of his space ship, rescue him. ASAP.

A shaft of burning pain shot through his leg and he jumped, then stared down in disbelief at the arrow sticking out of his calf, an inch below the knee. “I’ve been shot,” he said.

“Shot? By what?”

“By a big fucking arrow. Get down here. Now.”

Still the same scene at 2%:

“Son of Satan,” the priest cried, and the mob behind him roared.

Rico rolled his eyes. “We’re not actually related.”

He’s finally rescued. Not getting any sympathy from Tannis, though.

She ran a hand through her short, dark hair and raised one brow in accusation. “Been eating the natives, Rico?”

“Dios. I go out for a snack and all I get is hassle. I’ve got to eat.”

Later, when the sexual tension is rising between Rico and Skylar after they shared some whiskey (25%):

She rolled her eyes. “Well, I thought I did, though I have to admit it’s been a while.” A horrible idea occurred to her. “Is this some weird vampire shit? Do vampires even have sex? Everlasting Hell, don’t tell me you’re impotent.”

A bit later in the same scene,

“Impotent?” His tone was incredulous, outraged. He flexed his hips, pushing his erection against her as if to prove his point. “I am not impotent. I have sex. Hot, sweaty, liquefying sex. And I have it often.”

The last one at 70%:

Beside him, Skylar snorted. “This big, stupid, brain-dead, bloodsucking idiot thought we’d attack first.”

“All-dead, actually,” he inserted cheerfully.

There are several more passages I really enjoyed. I think it’s safe to say they all involved Rico! He is such an awesome hottie!

My rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
