The Shadows: Big Disappointment

On Friday night, I stayed up late to finish reading J.R. Ward’s 13th book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood, The Shadows. And yeah, I slept like crap after I finished it. You’ll find out why when you read below.

Before you read further, if you have not read The Shadows and plan to, know that SPOILERS ARE AHEAD.

Here’s the scoop on the Trez and iAm’s book:

Trez “Latimer” doesn’t really exist. And not just because the identity was created so that a Shadow could functiThe_Shadowson in the underbelly of the human world. Sold by his parents to the Queen of the S’Hsibe as a child, Trez escaped the Territory and has been a pimp and an enforcer in Caldwell, NY for years- all the while on the run from a destiny of sexual servitude. He’s never had anyone he could totally rely on… except for his brother, iAm.

iAm’s sole goal has always been to keep his brother from self-destructing- and he knows he’s failed. It’s not until the Chosen Serena enters Trez’s life that the male begins to turn things around… but by then it’s too late. The pledge to mate the Queen’s daughter comes due and there is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no negotiating.

Trapped between his heart and a fate he never volunteered for, Trez must decide whether to endanger himself and others- or forever leave behind the female he’s in love with. But then an unimaginable tragedy strikes and changes everything. Staring out over an emotional abyss, Trez must find a reason to go on or risk losing himself and his soul forever. And iAm, in the name of brotherly love, is faced with making the ultimate sacrifice…

Now…to my disappointment. And the SPOILERS. Continue reading “The Shadows: Big Disappointment”

My Thoughts: The King

This past week I had the misfortune of picking up the stomach bug. Yeah, the one that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy. At least if I had The_Kingto be home and feeling completely miserable, I had the nearly 600 page hardback copy of The King to keep my mind off my stomach. J.R. Ward’s latest release is book #12 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. In this novel, she revisits Wrath and Beth, who were the subjects of the very first BDB book, Dark Lover. Times have changed, though, since Wrath and Beth became mated. Caldwell is a different place. There are more Brothers, more matings, most of the Chosen now reside in a Great Camp in the Adirondacks, the Band of Bastards are wreaking havoc . . . well, you get the idea.

Here is the official description of The King:

Long live the King…

After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle–with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything–and everyone–at risk.

Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response–or the distance it creates between them.

The question is, will true love win out… or tortured legacy take over?

Before you read further, please note that there are spoilers. If you have yet to read the novel, you may want to stop reading this post. Now. Just sayin’! Continue reading “My Thoughts: The King”

Easter Weekend Wrap

Well, the holiday is nearly over, and I finally have time to take a breath – and sit down at the computer! It has been a busy but beautiful weekend!

I’m going to set-up this post like the previous “Wrap” posts. I hope you enjoy catching up on me (and taking a break from the book reviews).

Word to describe the weekend: I’m going with gorgeous because of the sunny, mostly mild days we had. Granted, they started off chilly, but the afternoons were very pleasant. It made for nice traveling weather.

Books: I just finished reading Chloe Neill’s book, Wild Things (Chicagoland Vampires #9). I have to say I really enjoyed it – even gave it 5 stars. Now, I can get started on J.R. Ward’s The King. Yay!! I’m so looking forward to that one!

Exercise: It is harder and harder to get to the gym. With Spring finally here, I want to be outside. I did go for a run Friday morning on the Rail Trail. I did about 3 miles in 27:44. My goal is to run a 5K in 27 flat. I’m not a fast runner (never have been), but since my knees won’t let me run half marathons anymore, I’m going to work on my 5K time. I did squeeze in a quick workout at Planet Fitness with my cousin on Saturday. I just love the ab coaster! I know, I’m weird. It works so well that I wish my gym would invest in one.

TV/ Movies: I’m still watching Arrow. Since I don’t get the CW, I watch it on Thursday on my iPad. It is a nice almost-end-of-the-week treat.Burn_Notice_Season1 In this past week’s episode, Felicity had some awesome lines – you go, girl!! My current Netflix obsession is Burn Notice. I just love Michael and Fiona. Sam cracks me up, and Maddie is a force all on her own!! I like the addition of Jesse to the cast. My one wish is that Michael and Fiona would be a couple again. They are so perfect for each other! Oh, and have I mentioned how much I like Michael’s sunglasses?? Doesn’t hurt that he’s always eating yogurt either.

Writing: The writing front is stalled. The zombie story was rocking; now, I just need time to get back to it. I reworked the beginning to up the tension, and I think it ties in better with the ending. One of these days…

I think that about covers it! Back to laundry for me. Then, I will be cracking open The King. Enjoy!

Lover at Last

I knew once I started it that I wouldn’t be able to put it down. So, it was my post-surgery reward. Book #11 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, Lover at Last, by J.R. Ward.

I’m probably one of the last BDB fans to be reading it, but it was so worth the wait. I love both Blay and Qhuinn, and I was so excited to see how they got their HEA. Ms. Ward did not disappoint. In fact, I was beginning to wonder as I got closer to the end… Never fear.

There was a lot going on in this book – all 591 pages of it – besides the drama between Qhuinn (and Layla) and Blay (and Saxton). Trez got a lot of page time as did Xcor and Assail. In fact, I’m not sure how she kept track of the POV’s! Continue reading “Lover at Last”

Another Job?

While at work today, I stopped by the “big box” bookstore to pick-up my reserved copy of J.R. Ward’s Lover at Last. I was so excited – no way was I going home without my copy of Blay and Qhuinn.

I also picked up Jeaniene Frost’s new release, Twice Tempted. It took me a minute to find Twice Tempted (it wasn’t shelved with the new releases), but once I picked-up a copy, I headed to the front desk/ cashier stand (for lack of a better description). I figured tLover_at_Lasthat my reserved copy would be located behind the front counter. The woman working the front counter has waited on me before so we chatted, and I explained that when I was in the previous week, I had reserved a copy of Lover at Last (I explained that I knew it was released today, etc.). She checked behind the counter but was unable to locate my copy. She said that it could be located in Customer Service; maybe they hadn’t brought it to the front yet. She dialed the phone, but no one answered. She explained that they were very short-handed today. Given that, and the fact two other customers were now in line behind me, I told her not to worry, I saw a copy on the floor, I would go pick up one. Apparently she didn’t hear everything I said as she was concerned with trying to figure out where it would be located to assist me in finding it. I said again that it was no problem that I had located it, and I pointed to where Lover at Last was displayed.

Jokingly, she asked me if I wanted a job. She commented that I certainly knew the store well; I would be a good bookseller. (Maybe when I retire??) I chuckled and headed off to get my book.

When I returned with the copy, I got back in line (at the end of the line). The older couple in front of me motioned that I should go ahead of them, that I was there first. I asked if they were sure; they commented that they weren’t in any rush. The woman working the counter told them that they shouldn’t do that as I needed to stay longer so I could work. They needed my help in the store!!

While I was very flattered, I left promptly after paying for both of my books. The offer was almost tempting – how nice would it be for a book lover to work in a bookstore?? Well, other than the fact all the money in my pay check would go back into the store!

My only difficulty is now keeping myself from starting Lover at Last. Once I do, I won’t be able to put it down and nothing else will get done.

Being an Author is a lot of Work!

While I realized I had work ahead of me to promote my release, Tumbling in Time, I had no idea just how much! I had a crazy singing weekend with concerts and rehearsals. No writing or promoting for me – sadly. Although, performing Randol Alan Bass’s Gloria with the Maryland Symphony totally rocked!! That is probably my top musical experience in my limited career. I confess that I’m even sad that we won’t be performing it again soon.

So, now I need to be signing up for blog hops, updating websites, and all other kinds of things to get my name and story out there. I started a Goodreads author page and updated my Amazon author page. I still need to update my website. I want to give a shout-out to Kara Leigh Miller for featuring my story on her blog – yay! Thanks so much, girl 🙂

Pride_MatesI’m still managing to read. Thank goodness! I just finished Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley. I also finished Rapture by J. R. Ward. Pride Mates was a unique take on mostly feline shifters. Liam and Kim made a great couple. Liam is a sexy Irishman with stunning blue eyes. He is a badass feline shifter. Kim is a tough defense attorney who isn’t afraid of much. Together, the pair tackle Fergus and his henchmen.

Of course, Rapture was good. I really liked that Matthias had forgotten his evil past and fell for Mels. Besides, Matthias and Jim made a kick-ass team. Well, with Adrian, too, who made a great sacrifice in this story. I’m seeing some intertwining of the BDB – gonna get even better!! Plus, I have to mention the reveal about Dog – very cool!!

Time for blogging is done. Back to my author profile on Goodreads. It’s always something, isn’t it?
